The Power of Prayer

When we pray, God hears us. When we pray we are partnering with God and demonstrate that we fully trust in His love and plan for us.

Prayer is essential for our individual spiritual growth and also for helping others, by praying for their needs and well being. The only way to have a healthy relationship with Jesus is to spend some time each day in prayer.

“ Never stop praying.”
1 Thessalonians 5:17

Prayer Works

God hears every prayer - but not all prayers are answered in the way we might expect or desire. We need to trust that God knows best how to best address these things we pray about. Jesus provided the example of how a close personal relationship with God was possible through prayer. Prayer also provided Jesus with comfort and strength during the most difficult periods of his ministry.

“And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.”
Matthew 21:22

Ways to Approach Prayer

For many Christians prayer is a daily, moment by moment, experience in talking to, listening to, and sharing our time with God. Prayer is natural, as is our impulse to share, to express joys and sorrows; and to listen by opening our hearts to God’s voice and guidance in scripture, silence and through other people.

Simply being with God, in a relationship where words aren’t always needed and sitting in God’s presence is enough.

“Pray in the Spirit, on all occasions, with all kinds of prayers and requests...”
Ephesians 6:18

This experience of God in prayer not only renews our lives and the life of the Church, it also makes us fellow travellers with people of faith of many different traditions and gives us a language of spirituality we can share when “faith” can so often seem to divide.

In our Anglican tradition there are many pathways to God through Jesus Christ, who guides us and prays on behalf of us. When prayer can seem hard or even boring or when God seems silent, there are ways to help us listen afresh and encounter God in new ways.
